People have varying opinions on pornography. Some of us view it as exploitative and criminal and some folks believe in a cybersex free-for-all. Most of us fall somewhere in between. Porn has capitalized on the internet age and it has become as ubiquitous as orange on a New York housewife. Our opinions on the nudies generally changes with age ; I remember being horrified whenever my slightly sadistic older sister used to force me to watch my dad's dirty videos (Pop, if you're reading this and discovering said fact for the first time, sorry.) and naturally things have changed somewhat. I admit to clicking on pop-ups from dirty sites because, well I have eyeballs and I'm weak-willed.

  Herein lies a serious problem with internet adult content- anyone can get at it. And many times, it is not consentual. We are bombarded with e-mails, pop-ups, and websites that aren't what they say they are. While I'm an adult and can choose to exit whatever content that offends me, if I were to stumble on this stuff at the office, I could be fired for it. But that's not even the largest issue- kids can and do witness some of the most graphic and abhorrent images ever created. I'm not talking about a wee spanking here, but things like women being used as toilets and children being violated in sickening ways. And I'm not really sure what the solution to this is, save for monitoring one's kids when they surf.

  In my opinion, pornography is not inherently evil, but some of the content certainly is. Nude images have been artistic staples since the beginning of time, but today's stuff is a far cry from this. There seems to be a bizarre one-upmanship occurring of late- people competing to produce the most extreme content for their overstimulated audience. Once-taboo "fantasies" like rape, scat, and bestiality have grown in popularity and degradation is the name of the game. Inside many of us is a sadist or at least a voyeur and we may be subconsciously enabling human trafficking in pursuit of a thrill. In many images found in today's sexual spectre, it is obvious that these women are not enjoying themselves, but people don't seem to care as long as they get jerk-off material. Equal sex-positive websites have an established base and seem to gain viewership via word-of-mouth. It is the fly-by-night businesses that are often involved in highly illegal activity that bombard us with their filth instead. All things are fair in search of quick money.

  The answer is not in extreme censorship as seen in Australia, but in personal accountability. If we don't pay for the more repulsive content, the industry will be required to adapt or perish. We cannot reverse the abuse that has already occurred, but we do play a part in how much is repeated in the future. Individuals are cells in the global body and it is in each of us to prevent the cancer from spreading. If you cannot manufacture erotica in your mind, at least buy it from companies that have established traditions of caring about those in their employ. And if you think rape and degradation of women and children is entertainment, feel free to advance token to the nearest cliff and take a dive.
